The Boulder-based company has arguably done more for public awareness and acceptance of the nonintoxicating chemical compound found in the cannabis plant than any other, starting in when the company's seven sibling owners — the Stanley brothers, then running a medical marijuana dispensary — met the Figi family. The whole plant hemp-derived strain, now named after the girl, was effective and reduced her seizures dramatically so that they only occurred a few times a month, and mostly while she was sleeping. The story made international headlines, the brothers became famous, opened a nonprofit and ramped up research and development as well as producing an entire line of products, many of which contain only CBD and are sold as dietary supplements. But, despite the fact they were shipping their products across state lines and even internationally, they were operating in a risky gray zone, one that prevented many big-name retailers from carrying their product.
